WORKING ACROSS TEAMS

Strong teams can still create a weak system

Sometimes one team meets its targets while making another team’s work harder. A strategic initiative repeatedly gets stuck between functions. A customer experience fragments across organizational boundaries.

When the challenge lives between teams, we need to work with what they are creating together.

WORKING ACROSS TEAMS

Follow how the work gets done

Value moves through relationships and dependencies that extend beyond the org chart. We make those connections visible and explore the conditions shaping them.

What is each team being asked to optimize? What information can it see? Where do incentives compete? What consequences are being created that nobody intended?

Understanding those conditions gives people a shared basis for changing the pattern.

WORKING ACROSS TEAMS

Build responsibility across boundaries

Many challenges cannot be solved by one team securing approval or negotiating a better handover.

We bring the relevant people into the work and explore a different question: What are we responsible for creating together?

That can change how teams involve stakeholders, make decisions and understand success. It also brings attention to people affected by the work whose perspectives may have been missing.

WORKING ACROSS TEAMS

Look towards what the system will need

Today’s friction is one starting point. The emerging future is another.

What will customers need? What will the strategy require? What must these teams become capable of doing together?

Those questions help us examine whether familiar boundaries and relationships still serve the work ahead.

WORKING ACROSS TEAMS

Experiment in the work itself

The engagement may involve several teams, their leaders and wider stakeholders. We may combine coaching, facilitation and practical experiments: changing a decision process, redesigning a conversation or testing a different way to collaborate.

We pay attention to the effects across the system, including whether an improvement in one place creates difficulty elsewhere.

The aim is greater collective capacity: a system of teams that can see, learn and act together.
